Music and The Arts

Music is an excellence program at Centenary State High School.  There are two complementary programs, Instrumental Music and Classroom Music.
Centenary State High School offers an excellent Instrumental Music program for students encompassing group tuition and ensemble rehearsals.  Students have the opportunity to participate in the school's award-winning ensembles and are provided with expert tuition from specialist Instrumental Music teachers.
Instruments that can be studied in the program include:
  • Woodwind – flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone (alto, tenor and baritone)
  • Brass – French horn, trumpet, euphonium/baritone, trombone, tuba
  • Percussion – tuned and un-tuned percussion
  • Strings – violin, viola, cello, double bass

The ensembles at Centenary SHS are:

                                                                                  •    Vocal Ensemble

All ensembles at the school perform regularly throughout the year both at school events and in the wider community including Brisbane Schools Bands Festival, Fanfare, Brisbane EKKA, ANZAC day ceremonies, Presentation evening, Primary Schools Tour and other community events.  The choir performs as a stand-alone choral performance group as well as providing the chorus for many school productions.
The Instrumental Music Program has been very successful and in 2017 there are approximately 240 students enrolled. The ensembles have won many awards including two golds and three silvers at Fanfare in 2016.
In 2016, the Vocal Ensemble travelled to Melbourne to compete in the AUSACA Australian A Cappella Championships, winning 1st place in the semi-final and were the only public school across the country who successfully gained a place in the Championship Final. They also won awards for Best Vocal Percussionist (Ethan Smith), Best Contemporary Song and two Outstanding Arrangement awards (Alex Van den Broek).  In 2017 both the Choir and Vocal Ensemble received Gold Awards at Education Queensland’s biennial festival Fanfare, with the Choir progressing to the Metropolitan Regional finals held at The Old Museum

High achieving students have opportunities to participate in extension programs such as the Queensland Conservatorium State Honours Ensemble Program, Creative Generation, as well as Education Queensland’s Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Instrumental Music (MOST).
