Lions Youth of the Year Quest

Darly and Nathan
Centenary SHS sweeps the pool in leadership and public speaking!
On February 21st, our two School Captains, Nathan and Darly, and Vice-captain, Will, participated in the Jindalee Lions Club Youth of the Year Quest final, competing against each other and against students from a private school in our district.
The Lions Youth of the Year Quest is judged in two stages: Firstly, entrants in the Quest are required to attend a private interview with the panel of judges, during which they are judged on their leadership, sporting and/or cultural activities, citizenship and community involvement, academic record, general knowledge and personality.  The interviews took place on Saturday February 18th.  In the interview the students were asked questions about their involvement in school and the community, along with topics of local, national and international importance.
Secondly, on the finals evening, students in the Quest deliver to the audience a prepared speech of five minutes duration, and two short impromptu speeches.  They are given no time to prepare for their impromptu responses, which is an enormously challenging task.  The questions asked of the entrants on this occasion were: “You have won 10 million dollars.  What are you going to do with it?” and “I have been meaning to tell you…”   Our students did a fantastic job, responding to these questions with maturity, intelligence and humour.  Their prepared speeches were inspirational and entertaining.
Congratulations to our Centenary SHS entrants.  I am delighted to report that Nathan was the overall winner of this round and will proceed to the Zone final.  Darly took out the public speaking prize.  I feel very proud to be their teacher and coach.  Thank you to Ms Huber for her support on the night.
