CENTENARY SHS ON TOUR!

The Centenary SHS Stage Band with their director, Mr Damon Lougheed, and Arts Head of Department, Ms Angela Sleeman, recently spent the weekend on tour in Rockhampton to participate in the CQUniversity Schools Jazz Festival.

Hosted by the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music, the jazz festival provides an opportunity for high school musicians to engage in two days of inspirational music-making with advice and guidance provided by an expert panel made up of internationally respected jazz musicians, educators and staff.

The festival is a one of a kind event in Queensland, offering students the chance to compete in a criteria-based competition as well as exposure to world-class, professional musicians and educators through workshops, clinics and concert performances.  This year, the guest adjudicator and clinician was Mr Andrew Robertson, an educator with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (amongst other things), who, as a performer, has played with people such as Michael Bublé, Boy George and Hugh Jackman, to name just a few.

The Stage Band walked away from the weekend with four awards!  We were awarded a gold award for our performance as well as receiving the award for the most outstanding trumpet section.  There were only two bands awarded gold awards over the weekend festival, which is a real testament to the excellence of the Centenary SHS musicians!  In addition to those two awards, we had two superstar performers acknowledged in the ensemble for mastery of their instrument and brilliant performances – the outstanding trumpet soloist award went to Year 12 student Andrew, and the outstanding rhythm section player (for bass guitar) went to Year 9 student Cooper.

The students also had a bit of time to sight see around the Beef Capital of Australia, taking in the sights of the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens and Zoo and also head to the Capricorn Coast.  There was even time for a fishing lesson, with a few baby bream caught and released!  It was an excellent weekend, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all.  Thank you to the Centenary SHS Performance and Arts Subcommittee for their generous financial support.  Congratulations to Andrew, Cooper and the Centenary SHS Stage Band!
